Two men organized a police-escorted memorial ride across Southwest Florida so people will ‘Never Forget’ 9/11. One was in New York when the tragedy happened so it holds a special place in his heart. “I was in New York, but upstate, the Valley. Hudson Valley. And uh…at work, in my office, when somebody came in and said a plane hit one of the towers,” said Vincent Stephen, one of the organizers. The other is now a fire chief in Fort Myers. A first responder who understands and respects what it takes to put your life on the line for others. “Actually I had just gotten off shift, here in Fort Myers. I was cutting the grass when my wife came out told me of the news,” said Tracy McMillion, Fire chief for City of Fort Myers Fire Department. Both men promise to never forget the that were lives taken and the sacrifices that were made on September 11, 2001. “You can’t help but wonder, did they know? That this might be the last opportunity they’d have?” McMillion wondered. “And knowing that they knew it might be the last opportunity they’d have, and be willing to lay it down and sacrifice it.” As we vow every 9/11 to never forget, these men made a promise by creating a memorial ride that will take place on Sunday. The ride to Honor the fallen will have a police escort and will start in Fort Myers and makes its way to Naples. “There will be cars jeeps trucks and everything,” Stephen said. Jay Lagace is another organizer who feels that people are starting to forget what happened. “I think that people are starting to forget, and we need to remember it,” Lagace said. These men hope you’re grateful for your life and hope that you’ll join them on Sunday to honor those lives that were cut short. “This is a great way to celebrate and pay homage to those that laid their lives down,” said Fire Chief McMillion. If you’d like to register for the ride, registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.The money raised will go to four different veteran and first responder charities.
