STARability is encouraging people to get active no matter their ability level – and for a good cause.

The Collier County organization has had to do its annual 3K a little differently this year due to the pandemic.

“This year the event is virtual where we’re encouraging supporters and participants to run, walk or roll in their own neighborhood or local park and to be with their close family in a safe and fun way to participate,” said Karen Govern, STARability executive director. “This is our third annual 3K.”

“We walked 1.67 miles,” said Laura Georgelos. Neighbors joined in as well as did about 100 people from across Southwest Florida.

“This is a fun thing we can all do together. We can loop other people in it as well, and just because we are virtual doesn’t mean everything in life has to stop,” Georgelos said.

STARability has become completely virtual since the pandemic began. “It has been challenging, so to see the support from the community, to know that they support what we’re doing now and what we will do in the future when we’re able to be back in person just means so much,” Govern said.

Luckily, they were able to garner more support than they ever expected. “We set an original goal of $10,000 and we did exceed that, so we raised the goal to 15,000, but as of this morning we looked and we had a raised over $18,000,” Govern said.

Because of the donations, Tori Georgelos has something big to look forward to even during the pandemic. “Thank you STARability!” she said.

“It means so much because in this time of uncertainty. It’s been a difficult time for many of our participants who before they were involved with STARability, they were leading a life of isolation,” Govern said.
