According to The School District of Lee County, it’s in the process of developing new zoning for elementary schools for the 2022-23 school year. It’s a proximity-based student assignment plan.

Through a collaboration between community and district stakeholders with Davis Demographics, GIS technology is being used to organize elementary schools and students into new attendance boundaries.

According to the District’s website, “The goals of the new elementary school student assignment plan are to make strategic improvements on the current plan by creating attendance zones that are smaller, address issues of student isolation, maintain choice, improve transportation efficiency (bus ride/wait times), and build stronger community schools.”

Each new draft scenario has between 15 to 16 new zones compared to the 6 sub-zones the District currently has.

Public meetings set to discuss Elementary school proximity zones

The District is inviting the community to a series of public meetings to learn about the proximity plan for elementary schools and provide feedback. Four public meetings are planned:

MONDAY, Jan. 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

  • Dunbar High School
3800 Edison Ave., Fort Myers, FL 33916

TUESDAY, Jan. 12 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

  • Cape Coral High School
2300 Santa Barbara Blvd., Cape Coral, FL 33991

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 13 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

  • Three Oaks Middle School
18500 Three Oaks Parkway, Fort Myers, FL 33967

THURSDAY, Jan. 14 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

  • Varsity Lakes Middle School
801 Gunnery Rd. North, Lehigh Acres, FL 33971

According to the District, after the public meetings, the ideas, suggestions and feedback will be incorporated into draft maps to develop a final version. Lee County School Board approval is expected in July 2021, and it is anticipated families will begin to use the new zones during the elementary school open enrollment period in 2022, for classes that start in August of 2022.
