A measured reaction from a school resource officer helped end a worrisome situation peacefully at Caloosa Middle School, when a student brought a loaded gun to school last week.

SRO Joe Zalenski says a big takeaway from last week was communication: See something, say something. And in this case, the report turned out to be a much bigger deal.

One student reported another for carrying a vape pen on campus, when in reality the 14-year-old was carrying a loaded gun. Zalenski says the school’s protocol in this situation is to lock the school down, call for assistance from the police department and work to mitigate the threat. These situations serve as opportunities to go back and analyze what worked and what didn’t.

A big challenge for any school threat is students coming forward to the police. The school praises the one who came forward about what was revealed to be a gun, and Zalenski has a message for anyone afraid to speak up.

“There is a culture of not snitching to the administrators or police officers,” Zalenski said. “I think the take-home message would be… is we’re not here to put people in jail. We are here to make sure kids go home safe. If someone happens to get arrested and has to face legal consequences, that’s not the primary mission for us. The primary mission for us is to ensure that every student comes on this campus safely and leaves in the same condition they showed up.”

When asked to stop this from happening again, Zalenski said a big part of that begins at home with the parents. He says communication is key in these situations, and students cannot be afraid to report a threat.

“I think parents need to talk to their kids and they need to take an active role in their lives,” Zalenski said. “They need to make sure that their kids are in a good place when they’re coming to school. Now more than ever, school safety is at the forefront, particularly here in Florida after our own experiences. I think parents really need to be involved with their child’s life and say ‘Hey, is everything OK, what’s going on, talk to me… who are you hanging around with… what are you doing… who are you with… ?'”

CCPD says it is still investigating where the teenager got the gun.
