Credit: WINK News Cape Coral Police hosted a “Chill and Grill” event Saturday at the William Austen Bill Youth Center in an effort to get to know the community. “We have a wonderful police force here, so we’re able to use their expertise in helping the kids learn some things that are good for them in keeping them safe. But at the same time, they’re regular people like ourselves,” said Donnell Field, site director for the youth center. The event had some good food, music, and a lot of outdoor activities for kids to hang out with the men and women in blue. It also helped them meet other kids. “Get with people they’re maybe not used to being around. With the school and social distancing issue and some kids are learning from home, one of the things they’re missing is the interactions,” Field said. Gabriella Moran is a mother and she’s seen this firsthand. Her son has had to adapt to changes during the pandemic, so she knows how meaningful the event can be. “Thank you to the Cape Coral Police for doing this for the community. We appreciate it,” Moran said. Cape Coral will be hosting events like this over the next few months.
