A man has been arrested in connection to the death of a one-year-old boy in Lehigh Acres.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Rolando Olivarez, 30, was arrested by U.S. Marshals on Sunday for the child’s death.

On September 17, deputies were called to a home on Homer Avenue South where they found a child unresponsive. The one-year-old was taken to Lehigh Regional Hospital and later to Tampa General where he died.

According to Sheriff Carmine Marceno, investigators found the injuries to the child were suspicious and non-accidental with “blunt force trauma to the head.”

“I am truly outraged by the actions of this despicable human being. After working closely with our State Attorney’s Office, I am proud to say our team has put him behind bars where he belongs,” Marceno added.

Nick, who didn’t want to be identified by his last name, is a neighbor. He said, “I’m shocked that this happened … He would always come up to me and shake my hand. ‘What’s up, bro’. I would never think he is violent or a criminal so this whole time I was livin’ by a criminal … Nobody knows. Nobody knows. Behind the doors, it’s another life and outside it’s another life ”

Olivarez was arrested by US Marshalls more than six months later. Marceno described the suspect as an acquaintance and a caretaker of the child.
