New initiative asks public to donate funds for possible hurricane response

Hurricane Season is just a month and a half away and local organizations are already planning ahead to help the community after the storm.

The new initiative at the Community Foundation of Collier County is called “Your passion, your Collier.”

The group is working to raise $2.5 million so they have money saved to be able to respond and help minutes after a storm.

This was a key takeaway after Hurricane Irma struck the area in 2017, said Eileen Connolly-Keesler, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Collier County.

“Housing was number one issue,” Connolly-Keesler said.

“A lot of the money went to housing,” she said, adding that, “We want to raise money before we’ve got the actual need. Want it upfront so we can move.”

The goal is to have the money raised by September, which is the height of hurricane season.
