The search is on for a thief who is accused of stealing a bottle of liquor, hitting a grocery worker with their car and then driving off.

Saturday, Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hit-and-run at the Publix at 19100 S Tamiami Trail, where investigators say a woman was caught taking a bottle of liquor from the grocery store.

When the store employee confronted the suspect outside, the suspect is accused of backing out of a parking space in an SUV, hitting that employee and leaving the scene.

The suspect vehicle is a red Ford Expedition with a Michigan license plate.

A man who lives nearby thinks the worker was brave for confronting the suspect.

“I applaud the cashier for stopping them and saying something,” Thomas Matter said. “We shouldn’t live in a world where people can just walk into businesses and just take whatever they want.”

We did not know the status of the Publix employee Thursday.
