(Joe Burbank/Orlando Sentinel via AP, File) A jury has found Markeith Loyd guilty of killing Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton in 2017, according to CBS News affiliate WKMG in Orlando. Jurors began deliberating on Tuesday afternoon but reached no verdict. They returned a guilty verdict at around 1:30 p.m on Wednesday. Loyd, 46, was found guilty on five charges, including first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault with a firearm and carjacking with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The jury will return on Saturday for the death penalty phase of the trial, WKMP reported. Loyd testified during the trial and claimed self-defense when he shot at and killed Clayton outside of a Walmart. Loyd killed Clayton while he was on the run for killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend Sade Dixon in Dec. of 2016. He is serving life in prison for that crime. Loyd’s defense claimed he was suffering from delusions and paranoia when he shot Clayton.
