(Credit: WINK News) Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno was joined by Lee County NAACP President James Muwakkil to speak about the conditions of the Lee County Jail as observed by the NAACP after an inmate’s death. The father of that inmate is desperate for answers, angry after his son died while in custody at the Lee County Jail earlier this month. Paul Carbone says staff should’ve taken the 30-year-old to the hospital. Sheriff Carmine Marceno addressed those concerns in a news conference on Tuesday, but Carbone isn’t satisfied. He doesn’t understand why staff in the medical ward at the Lee County Jail did not take his son Michael to the hospital. They knew he was sick and still, Carbone says a bacterial infection spread to his son’s heart and killed him. “I truly believe that if he would have been taken to the hospital when he got there, he would have been put on antibiotics and it would’ve saved his life,” said Carbone. Carbone said the sheriff has never called him and will not answer his questions directly. On Tuesday, the sheriff called a news conference with the Lee County NAACP to talk about medical treatment at the jail. Mike Love with the Lee County NAACP said, “we were impressed by the condition of the medical ward.” Marceno described the care at the jail as top of the line. “A full team of doctors and nurses are staffed to care for the inmates as needed. If necessary, those professionals will determine if an inmate requires further specialty care that cannot be provided at our facility. In those circumstances, inmates are transported to a hospital.” The only thing the sheriff said about Michael Carbone’s death, is that as a result of “medical complications” the inmate died. Michael’s dad doesn’t buy it. The only thing that might change his mind is the video of his entire stay in the medical ward. WINK News reporter Breanna Ross asked sheriff Marceno if he would release that video. “We don’t have one of the particular cell where the incident took place. Only videos of the common areas.” Paul Carbone thinks there is more to see. “I believe there is more than just a camera in the common area. I would like to see any video they have.” Short of that, Carbone called what’s happening now a coverup. The sheriff did express his condolences to the Carbone family during the news conference. He also told wink news the criteria for transporting an inmate from the medical ward to the hospital is case-specific.
