The Collier County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what they say is a concerning message that was found written on a desk at Gulf Coast High School.

Detectives are actively investigating the message and working to determine the source. They have not released the contents of the message.

Out of an abundance of caution, Collier County Sheriff’s deputies will have an enhanced presence at the school on Thursday. The sheriff’s office says school safety remains its top priority.

The sheriff’s office says if you see something of concern to not spread it person-to-person or on social media, instead report it. You can call CCSO at 239-252-9300. Or, to remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward you can contact Crime Stoppers at 800-780-8477.

Principal Kim Lonergan sent the following email to parents on Wednesday:

Good afternoon Shark family,

We were made aware of a concerning statement written on a classroom desk that was also photographed and has been circulating on social media. Collier County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating. Out of an abundance of caution, CCSO plans to have an enhanced law enforcement presence on campus. Student and staff safety remain a top priority, which is why we wanted to make you aware. During an active investigation, we must be careful not to say anything that could impede the investigation. I ask that you trust in our school and the professionals who work with our students each day.

Please talk to your child about the serious consequences that may result from making a threat — verbal, written, or an image, including via electronic transmission — against another student or a school. Remind your child, that if they see something of concern they should report it immediately to an adult and not spread it. When we all work together, we help keep Collier safe.

As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly. Have a good evening!
