A man who barricaded himself inside an apartment building on Second Street in downtown Fort Myers on Monday morning is now in custody.

The Fort Myers Police Department negotiated with Deandra Jefferson, 29, inside the building for several hours beginning late Sunday night.

A SWAT team and the Fort Myers Fire Department were also present, leading Second Street to be temporarily shut down between Evans Avenue and Park Avenue to accommodate the heavy police presence.

Police say Jefferson exited the building and surrendered peacefully around 8:20 a.m. Monday. They say it was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community.

Jefferson is facing charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, firing a weapon in a public or residential property, and a probation violation. He was taken to the Lee County Jail.
