12-year-old on bicycle hit by school bus in Cape Coral, minor injuries

A middle school student was struck by a school bus at the 1100 block of Chiquita Boulevard North Wednesday morning.

According to the School District of Lee County, the 12-year-old girl is a  Mariner Middle School student and she crossed Chiquita Boulevard on a bicycle in front of the bus and was hit.

They were transported “as a precaution for bumps, bruises, and scrapes” with no major trauma or broken bones and has since been released.

The child was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and it’s credited for preventing serious injury.

The preliminary investigation shows that the driver was not at fault, according to the school district, however, the police department said it’s still too early in the investigation to say.

The school district says the incident remains an active investigation and the driver will complete a drug test, which is standard procedure when any driver is involved in a crash or receives a ticket.

The identity of the bicyclist has not been released.
