Lehigh Acres firefighters save dog stuck in culvert after brush fire

The Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District saved a dog on Wednesday morning after extinguishing a brush fire and finding the dog stuck inside the culvert pipe where it was hiding from the flames.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly before they turned their attention to Max.

After two hours, Max the dog was extricated from the culvert where he had taken shelter from the fire on 71st Street West.

Crews said he was scared but was otherwise in good health.

Katie Heck, with Lehigh Acres Fire Control & Rescue District, said the owner was very grateful, “And we again, we were happy to help. You know, our firefighters are definitely always dedicated to making sure that, you know, they rescue anyone, whether it’s a person or an animal, and they were not going to leave until they got that dog out of the culvert pipe.”

Heck said, Max was unsure of all the attention at first, but after several treats and pets, he seemed fine.

The rescue crew described it as a happy way to end their long shift.
