A 62-year-old woman from Lehigh Acres was killed in a crash at an intersection in Highlands County Thursday night.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a van driven by a 42-year-old woman from Okeechobee was traveling north on County Road 721, south of US 98, around 8:30 p.m. A sedan driven by a 38-year-old Lehigh Acres woman, containing three passengers from Lehigh, was traveling west on US 98, east of County Road 721. The van failed to properly stop for a stop sign and collided head-on with the sedan.

After the collision, both vehicles were redirected off the roadway and came to rest in a ditch. The eldest of the three passengers in the car, the 62-year-old woman, was declared dead; the other two passengers, a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, suffered minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
