A Port Charlotte mother faces a child neglect charge after Charlotte County Sheriff’s deputies learned that she had left her five-year-old son home alone.

Before 7:30 a.m. Monday, deputies responded to a crash on US-41 that involved 27-year-old Jasmine A. Rodriguez. While investigating the crash, Rodriguez told her parents that she needed them to pick up her son.

Deputies say Rodriguez did not know exactly where she had left her son when she left.

According to the sheriff’s office, the five-year-old was found outside by the child’s grandparents after getting a call from Rodriguez to check on the child.

An investigation revealed that Rodriguez had left the child home alone while driving her boyfriend to work and was involved in the crash. Deputies say that Rodriguez never told them her son was unsupervised. Rodriguez eventually admitted she left her son at home alone and was taken into custody.

Rodriguez is facing a charge of child neglect. Her five-year-old son was released into the custody of his grandparents.
