A nationwide shortage could mean high school seniors could be graduating without a cap and gown.

In Lee County, both Mariner High School and Fort Myers High are short by more than 100 gowns.

Both schools are asking for hand-me-downs in order for graduates to be able to wear full regalia.

But if you can’t come up with one, the school district said they will find one for your graduating senior.

The company that sells them, Herff Jones, is short.

“Here we are four days before graduation and they said they might arrive by Saturday morning. Well, graduation’s at 2:30 in the afternoon,” said Amanda Hawkins, whose son is graduating this weekend.

The Fort Myers High principal sent an email asking the community for cap-and-gown donations.

The email said if you placed your order by March 15, you should be good to go.

And if you didn’t you might be out of luck.

If you have any to spare, please drop the gowns at the school.

“I reached out to some friends and family on Facebook and posted a message saying hey, we have this situation, cap and gowns didn’t come in,” Hawkins said.

Someone responded and Hawkins got one for her son.

“He’s a guy. So when I told him about this, he was like, OK, well, I hope I get one but I think he knew that his mom would come through for him because I always do,” she said.

The Lee County school district spokesman didn’t explain to WINK News how it would provide a cap and gown to everyone.

One other question is what happened to students who have already paid and aren’t lucky enough to get a gown.

WINK News also reached out to Herff Jones but did not hear back.
