The pastor at Fairway Church in Naples said they were told they have until September to find another place to worship.

That’s because the developer has decided to build a 368-unit apartment complex. The pastor, Tim Reed, has no idea where they’ll go or what his congregation’s going to do.

Reed knew something along these lines was in the cards and could unfortunately happen.

“We moved in under a previous owner,” said Reed.

While faith is a cornerstone of Reed’s life, he didn’t want to believe that it was going to happen.

“He sold it to a developer,” said Reed.

Years ago, the man who owned the land warned Reed the developer wanted to do something else with the land, and now it’s come to pass.

“And so they’ve given us the letter that they’re terminating our lease,” said Reed.

The church which has served thousands of people for the last two years is set to be demolished on Nov. 1.

“Obviously the developer looks at it from a business standpoint, and we look at it from an emotional standpoint, and honestly, there would never be enough time to prepare me to be able to see this torn down,” said Reed.

While it’s undeniable that people need places to live, to Reed this is a sign of so much more. Reed believes that the pandemic pivoted the importance of religion in our lives.

“And so many people, two-and-a-half years out of their routine, has become the new routine,” said Reed. “And it just makes me sad that a lot of people won’t come back.”

“Because the routine of life changed,” said Reed. “And to be honest, in our society right now, it doesn’t seem to be important in people’s lives anymore.”

This doesn’t mean the pastor is going to give up his ministry. He and his church feed hundreds of families a week thanks to its food bank in partnership with St. Mathew’s House.
