On Tuesday, the Fort Myers City Council is expected to discuss the possibility of taking the golf cart off the course and letting people drive them on certain roads.

The people WINK News have spoken to are not too keen on the idea of having golf carts out there on the roads with other cars in the City of Fort Myers. They want to do everything in their power to make sure all of their family members, including the furry ones, are safe and out of harm’s way.

Golf carts are easy to drive and energy efficient, but are they safe enough to drive on the roads?

“No. I vote against the golf carts,” said Tyler Modjeski.

Modjeski is pretty sure of his answer. “They don’t belong on the road. They belong on the sidewalk. I think they belong on a golf course. Probably at best, a retirement community. And this ain’t one of them.”

This week, members of the city council will consider whether there should be golf carts on city streets and not just inside retirement communities.

The caveat; golf carts must be street legal and would only be allowed on roads with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less.

“I think any street legal vehicle should be allowed to ride on the road,” said Jared Reese, who said he will not be driving his family on the roads in a golf cart.

When WINK News told Modjeski that the city might consider this, he said, “They should legalize other things first, besides golf carts, was much, much higher priorities on that list.”

If the motion were to pass, all golf carts would need the proper safety lighting to be allowed on the roads in Fort Myers. The drivers would also need a valid driver’s license.

The council will discuss this at their meeting on Tuesday.
