People who lined up to vote in the midterms on Election Day in Lee County were greeted with very long lines at the reduced number of polling places.

WINK News witnessed a line slowly encircle the North Fort Myers Recreation Center, located at 2000 Recreation Park Way, over the course of an hour or so, stretching to the playground just beyond the parking lot. People told WINK the whole process took around an hour, but they also said it was worth the wait.

Lauren Alloy, from Cape Coral, says she came out on Monday, saw a small line and said to herself, ‘Heck no.’ On Tuesday morning, she returned to a wait that proved far longer than she would have had to endure on Monday. Either way, Alloy made her voice heard, and she’s proud of that.

“This is very important, because I feel like there is so much division and so much going on, and who am I?” Alloy said. “You know, I’m nobody, and this is such a big state; I come from Connecticut, so Connecticut is the size of my big toe compared to Florida. So, being here, I feel like by voting my voice is heard just a little bit. Not too much, just a little bit.”

For people who waited until Election Day to perform their civic duty, the polls remain open until 7 p.m. The already formidable lines only seem to get longer, though, so it’s better done sooner rather than later.

Visit the Lee County website to find which polling site is closest to you and what the wait time looks like there.
