The holiday countdown begins and it will cost you about 10% more to buy gifts for your loved ones this year.

Here are a few tips on saving when shopping for gifts this season.

It’s easy to get lost in the aisles, carried away by the bright lights and sales signs.

But before you walk out the door and into the stores, make a list and check it twice.

NerdWallet’s personal finance expert Kimberly Palmer recommends writing down everyone’s name and assigning a spending cap for each person you’re shopping for.

“It’s so easy to buy a gift early on and then buy a second gift that you forgot about that first gift you already bought, so organization is key,” Palmer said.

Once you buy someone on your list a gift, cross them off.

And if that’s still busting the budget and you want to cut down on the number of gifts you buy.

Ask relatives or your friend group to do a Secret Santa instead.

One more tip, once you buy what you need, consider unsubscribing to emails so you’re not tempted to buy.
