A Lee County high school can finally move with a project that will give them a new football field.

Fort Myers High School raised the money to replace the natural grass on Sam Sirianni Field at Edison Stadium with synthetic turf and a new rubberized track.

The project, worth $1,000,000, was funded by multiple organizations, including the Miami Dolphins.

The Sanibel Captiva Community Bank dropped the final $275,000 into the program to get it fully funded.

Fort Myers High’s Fund the Field program hoped to have the money raised, and the field finished months ago. But, after the storm, some of the donors backed out. Then, the Sanibel Captiva Community Bank stepped up to get the project across the goal line.

WINK News spoke with Steven Cato, the athletic director of Fort Myers High School, and Giana, a track and soccer student-athlete, about accomplishing their goal.

“It was a community effort at Fort Myers high we consider ourselves a family from all the alumni to the students to the parents – so it took everybody working together to get this accomplished,” Cato said.

“I’m really excited because we will probably be able to host track meets here because we never used to be able to on this track cause no one could wear spikes, so I’m really excited to have a home track meet,” Giana said.

Installing the new turf will begin as soon as possible.
