FPL installing power lines under Times Square in Fort Myers Beach

On Monday, Florida Power & Light will begin installing power lines under Fort Myers Beach’s Times Square.

“First thing we noticed when we came down in October and November was there was no lights, there’s no electricity, there’s no plumbing, there’s no place to go to the bathroom or something like that or wash your hands,” said Bob Varebrook, seasonal resident.

“Without a shadow of a doubt, that allows the community to really start rebuilding,” said Kevin Kerr, a seasonal visitor.

For many, this is a relief and may bring a sense of normalcy.

“The plus side of the devastation is that now you have the opportunity to set this area up for the next 30 or 50 years,” Kerr said.

Regardless, people will still visit and love Fort Myers Beach.

“So the power here would be great, but it’s still a pretty awesome place. We love Fort Myers Beach, whether there’s power,” said Christine Brickman, Fort Myers Beach local.

“I love this place. It’s magical to me,” said Jennifer Winger, a vacationer from Ohio.

“We came this year no matter what,” Kerr said.

“This is not going to change overnight, but I think with each step in the right direction, it’s going to get back to where it should be,” Varebrook said.

The work is expected to last one week. Some sections may be blocked off to ensure safety, and pedestrians should be aware of workers. No road closures are anticipated.

Once the work is complete, service will be restored to the Times Square area and help Fort Myers Beach come back better than ever.
