Fort Myers police are investigating the death of a woman found early Tuesday morning in a canal off Carrell Road.
According to the Fort Myers Police Department, a passerby called around 6:45 a.m. about a body spotted in the canal outside Mariners Landing. The body turned out to be a yet-unidentified elderly woman dead.
Police do not believe the case is a homicide, but they will treat it as such until it turns out to be proven accidental. They believe the woman was looking at wildlife early in the morning before she slipped and fell into the canal.
A medical examiner will be performing an autopsy.
