An 18-year-old from Illinois has been arrested after breaking a Naples police officer’s arm while trying to run away.

The Naples Police Department says 18-year-old Quinn Riordan, 19-year-old Matthew Austin, and a third unknown person were spotted at the end of the Naples Pier on Friday just after 8 p.m.

Police say the pier is closed due to damage caused by Hurricane Ian and is marked as off-limits with signage and a locked gate.

According to police, the three people were at the end of the pier and appeared ready to jump into the water. Police say they were able to get the attention of the three men and get them to return to the gate.

Austin came back over the fence and was taken into custody without issue. He is facing a charge of violating a city ordinance.

Naples police said when Riordan came back over the fence, he asked what was going on, and when he was told he was being detained, he pushed one of the officers into the other and ran.

The officers chased Riordan and were able to catch up to him. While officers took Riordan to the ground, Riordan landed on one of the officer’s arms, causing it to break. Police say Riordan continued to kick at officers and pull away from them as they took him into custody.

As police took Riordan into custody, the third person from the group jumped from the pier onto the sand and ran. Police say the man was possibly wearing blue swim shorts with no shirt or shoes and ran toward 11th Avenue South.

Riordan is facing charges of battery on an officer and resisting arrest with violence. Both Austin and Riordan have been released on bond.
