A Cape Coral man has been arrested after police say he was going more than 100 miles per hour while trying to escape officers.

Police say Joseph Michael Patrick Ciccarelli, 36, was caught doing 80 in a 40-mile-per-hour zone on Del Prado Boulevard South just before 10:30 Monday night. Officers say Ciccarelli was driving without his lights on and nearly hit another car.

Officers tried to stop Ciccarelli, but he ignored them and kept driving. Police say Ciccarelli drove through a red light, weaved in and out of traffic, and fled from officers at speeds that exceeded 100 miles per hour.

Due to the risk to other drivers on the road, police backed off. An investigation quickly revealed that Ciccarelli was the man behind the wheel. Police learned earlier on Monday Ciccarelli was also involved in a crash in the same car they saw him speeding in.

Police were able to speak to Ciccarelli, who was unable to provide them with an explanation for his reckless driving.

Ciccarelli was arrested and is facing charges of fleeing from police.
