Lee County students must wait longer for fall school assignments

According to a Sunday night email, Lee County students will not learn on Monday which schools they will be attending in the fall.

Not only do incoming middle and high schoolers not know where they’ll be going, but also elementary students who no longer live in the new zones the district is condensing.

The School District of Lee County sent an email to parents apologizing for the inconvenience of the delay. The student assignments for the 2023-2024 school year were scheduled to be released in the Focus Parent Portal, but the district is still working on it.

The district’s new proximity plan shrank the school zones in which people can send their children, keeping students closer to home to reduce school bus driver commutes and help with the bus driver shortage.
