A man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after police say he attacked someone following an argument in Sanibel and then fled the scene.

According to the Sanibel Police Department, 40-year-old Eligio Alberto Sivira Hernandez was arrested after police responded to a 911 call on the “C” span of the Sanibel Causeway around 1:30 p.m.

The caller told police that one person had stabbed another, and all parties were on the causeway. Officers learned the incident took place at a job site on Sandcastle Road in Sanibel. Hernandez became involved in an argument with the victim and cut the victim with a box cutter.

Hernandez fled the job site in one vehicle while the victim and a witness left the scene to go to the hospital in another vehicle. For an unknown reason, Hernandez, the victim, and the witness stopped in the same spot on the Sanibel Causeway. The victim and witness locked themselves in their vehicle and called 911.

All three were still present when SPD and EMS arrived. EMS treated the victim as well as Hernandez, for what appeared to be a self-inflicted cut on his left arm.

Hernandez was taken to the Lee County Jail. He faces a charge of aggravated battery.
