20-year-old receives life sentence after shooting at deputies

A 20-year-old man will spend life behind bars for the attempted murder of a law enforcement officer in 2020.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, Travis Clayton Rains was also sentenced to 10 years for burglary and 15 years on each count of discharging a firearm from a vehicle and shooting at an occupied vehicle. All sentences are running concurrently.

The incident happened when Rains was 17 years old.

He was directly filed to adult court by prosecutors.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, a home was burglarized on Sept. 15, 2020, in the San Carlos Park area. When deputies responded, the suspects tried to flee in a van.

A shootout then occurred at the intersection of Three Oaks Parkway and Alico Road. Rains was the passenger in the van shooting at deputies.
