A shooting occurred at Bernwood Place Drive, near the Bernwood Trace Apartments, in Fort Myers Thursday afternoon.

According to the Fort Myers Police Department, one person has been detained, and one person was shot.

Neighbors say that the suspect tried to break into the same apartment four separate times throughout the day, yelling out the name of someone who doesn’t even live there. The man finally kicked in the door and got inside, and that’s when confused neighbors shot him.

They also said that they’ve never seen that man before.

Fort Myers police said that person who was shot is being treated for their injuries, although the extent of their injuries is unknown.

They also said that one person is detained, but wouldn’t say if that person is facing charges or not.

Neighbors who heard the gunshots and live close to where the shooting took place say they could see a trail of blood from the third flood apartment, all the way down the staircase and into the parking lot.

“The guy ended up breaking the kid’s door down and the kid doesn’t know him at all,” said Tony Conway, neighbor. “I don’t know if it was mistaken identity or what the case was. He was at the wrong apartment, but he came back three times and this last time he came back, he shot him, evidently three times because I heard three shots.”

Neighbors said that the man who fired the gun is in his 20’s and lives with his family here.

Other neighbors pointed out that the gates here at this apartment complex are constantly broken, and they now worry about their safety.

According to Fort Myers police, this is an isolated incident, and they aren’t searching for anyone else related to this shooting.
