The City of Sanibel has announced its final storm debris pick-up date for residents.

Sanibel property owners have until Dec. 8 to place all storm debris generated from weather-related events on the public right-of-way to ensure pick-up by the city’s contractor.

The public right-of-way is the area of property that extends from the street to the sidewalk, ditch, utility pole or easement.

The City of Sanibel has secured authorization from FEMA to reimburse for debris removal costs for commercial properties, including condominiums.

Once Dec. 8 has passed, the city will no longer pick up storm debris for residents. If storm debris persists, the property owner must dispose of it themselves.

The City of Sanibel asks residents to divide their debris accordingly:

  • Vegetative Debris—whole trees, tree stumps, tree branches, tree trunks and other leafy material.
  • Building Demolition Debris—damaged components of buildings and structures such as lumber and wood, wallboard, glass, metal, roofing materials, tile, furnishings and fixtures.
  • Appliance white goods—refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, heat pumps, ovens, ranges, washing machines, clothes dryers and water heaters.
  • Electronic waste—computers, televisions, office electronic equipment, etc.
  • Household hazardous waste—ignitable, reactive, toxic or corrosive materials, such as paints, cleaners and pesticides.

The city asks that residents avoid stacking debris below low-hanging power or utility lines and do not place debris within four feet of mailboxes, water meters, fire hydrants and any other above-ground utility.
