Crews are working to remove derelict boats from Gilchrist Park after several of them washed ashore during Hurricane Milton in October.

Gilchrist Park is right on the water in Punta Gorda, near the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center.

On Thursday, crews removed one of the five boats and secured it on a truck to move it out of the area.

The other four boats are scattered around the park and in some neighborhoods.

Some neighbors told WINK News that they’re really excited to see the park open back up soon.

However, in defiance of its closure, some have still visited the park for walks.

According to the Punta Gorda Police Department, a community clean-up event will be held at the park on Dec. 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pizza will be provided for lunch for those who join the clean-up event.
