The Mid-Hawthorn Aquifer, one of Cape Coral‘s primary water sources, is critically low, resulting in a water shortage in the northern parts of the city.

As a result of the lower water levels, the South Florida Water Management District declared a water shortage in November, calling for a mandatory one-day-a-week watering restriction.

The restriction remains in effect.

Amid this shortage, the City of Cape Coral is asking residents to comply with restrictions and conserve water.

According to the city, residents can help conserve water by:

  • Watering lawns early in the morning to reduce evaporation
  • Using drought-tolerant plants
  • Repairing leaks in irrigation systems, faucets and toilets

Relief is on the way, as the North 1 Utilities Expansion Project (UEP) will address about 5% of the impacted area by 2027.

The North 6 UEP will complete the remaining 25% by 2030.
