Gas line crash on U.S. 41 near Alico Road, at least 1 person dead

The northbound lanes of U.S. 41 near Alico Road was closed for hours due to a fatal crash involving a gas line that left one vehicle engulfed in flames.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 8 a.m. when a vehicle traveling north on U.S. 41, near Alico Rd. entered the outside shoulder and collided with a gas line.

The vehicle ignited in flames, and at least one person was confirmed dead, with the investigation ongoing to determine if there were other occupants in the vehicle.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been identified.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the closure on X.

The southbound lanes of U.S. 41 were first to open, at around 11:05 a.m., according to San Carlos Park Fire Protection & Rescue Service District.

It took firefighters almost two hours to put out the flames.
