Construction work has commenced at the busy intersection of Del Prado Boulevard and Averill Boulevard in Cape Coral.

This development is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions for several months.

Crews have started installing a traffic light at this intersection in the northeast part of Cape Coral.

The signal will be at Del Prado Boulevard North and Averill Boulevard.

The project aims to ease traffic flow, particularly during the busy season, and improve safety by reducing the speed limit from 50 mph to 35 mph.

Left turns from Averill Boulevard, northbound onto Del Prado Boulevard, will also be restricted.

The city advises drivers to access Del Prado Boulevard from the Gator Circle area and use the traffic signal at Del Prado Boulevard and De Navarra Parkway.

Liva Sera, a Cape Coral resident, expressed support for the new traffic light.

“I feel it would help definitely, as there is more drivers not everyone is used to stopping and giving right away and having a light would stop a lot of things from happening,” said Sera.

Sera added that having another light would be beneficial.

Sharon Gunderson, who lives nearby, also agreed that the area needs improvements regarding traffic.

“I think it would be a great idea for people that are taking their kids to school and they have to get to work, and it could be frustrating if you are late dropping off your kid and then be late to work, so it’s a great idea,” said Gunderson.

Gunderson mentioned she often avoids making turns at intersections like this one due to the absence of a traffic light.

“I don’t do that and let me put it this way and give you an example if there is no light I’ll go make a right and make a U-turn and come back up and it’s quicker I don’t like pulling out in traffic when there is no light and I think the light would be a better idea,” said Gunderson.

The traffic signal is expected to be finished by April.
