The Fort Myers Police Department has confirmed that a U.S. Marshal shot a suspect at Mel’s Diner on Cleveland Avenue.

This happened on Wednesday at around 1 p.m., and since then, the restaurant has been blocked off to the public with yellow tape. Investigators have been in and out of the building since then.

FMPD told us that a U.S. Marshall Task Force officer shot at the suspect.

The suspect is in custody and has been taken to a local hospital.

According to FMPD, no law enforcement or bystanders were injured.

FDLE has taken over the investigation, and FMPD will assist.

WINK News spoke to people staying at the Baymont Hotel next door, who told us they heard four to five rapid gunshots and that’s when they ran outside.

“We were passing through, looking for our hotel that we had googled, and it was leading us here, and then we couldn’t pull in because of all the cost tape crime scene,” said Brian Friesz, who was staying at Baymont Hotel.

Friesz got a closer look from inside the hotel.

“We walked around and we was able to see the crime scene, detectives, the marshals and other people in the rooms of the back of the hotel. They had clipboards. There were seven or eight of them walking in a herd. They was looking in the trash cans, maybe looking for a lead. I’m just guessing,” Friesz said.

This is an active investigation.
