Sanibel is tightening its grip on school zone speeders with newly installed cameras. Drivers exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 mph could soon face fines.

The Sanibel Police Department has introduced these cameras, marking the first use of school zone speed cameras in Lee County.

Enforcement will begin as soon as next week, starting with a warning period.

After 30 days, tickets up to $100 will be issued to those caught speeding during school hours, Monday through Friday.

Eric Jackson, the City of Sanibel Public Information Officer, emphasized the program’s focus on safety.

“The purpose of this entire program is about kids’ safety,” said Jackson. “It’s about protecting our students. It’s about protecting the families that are outside the school and coming in every day and leaving, and not having multiple people speeding through school zones and not paying attention to what’s going on there. So it’s all about student safety.”

Sanibel officials hope other cities and counties will adopt similar measures to enhance student safety.
