South Gulf Cove to host benefit for family of slain Charlotte deputy

The South Gulf Cove Homeowner Association will host a fundraising event to honor the late Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office deputy Sgt. Elio Diaz.

The clubhouse event will be held at 14859 Ingraham Blvd. in Port Charlotte on Saturday, from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The event will feature an array of attractions, including a parade and live music:

  • Golf cart parade at 2 p.m.
  • Yard sign parade at 2:30 p.m.
  • Live music from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Hamburgers and hotdogs
  • 50/50 Raffles
  • Raffle tickets to win $1,000 sponsored by Vantage Homes
    • 1 ticket for $10 or 3 tickets for $20
    • Note: Winner does not need to be present to win
  • Raffle items
  • Outdoor movie night featuring the movie “Police Academy”
    • Be sure to bring a chair

The live performances will feature Morgan Sky outside from 3 to 4 p.m., the Marker 5 Band outside from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and the Boca Beach Boys inside from 4 to 5 p.m.

All proceeds will be donated to Diaz’s family.

On the same day, the Tampa Bay Rays will play against the Boston Red Sox at their Spring Training home opener in Charlotte Sports Park at 1 p.m.

The Tampa Bay Rays are planning to honor Diaz at the game.
