Activists are challenging real estate developers who aim to build condos on a panther preserve in Charlotte County near Peace River Shores.

The TAG Lakeside Developments project has sparked concerns from environmental groups.

On Tuesday, the TAG Lakeside LLC project went before the Board of Charlotte County Commissioners for land-use approval at an adoption hearing.

If the board approves the amendments, the property may be developed as proposed, increasing the density to 1,188 multi-family residential units and dedicating around 60 acres to preservation.

Charlotte County Planning and Zoning Official Shaun Cullinan said, “It’s doubling, roughly doubling, the amount of preservation area. We also have provisions where they’re going to have to find a way to provide sanitary water and sewer. They cannot put what’s called package plants on there. So we’re trying to address as many of the environmental items through preservation, as well as providing for centralized services that they can’t do on-site.”

Despite these measures, many in the community believe this is insufficient.

Public comments have already begun, highlighting the ongoing controversy surrounding the development.
