The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a death investigation after a body was found in the Caloosahatchee River.

Law enforcement began investigating the area near Midpoint Bridge in Cape Coral at around 11:39 a.m. on Wednesday.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is the body of an older male.

FWC spoke with WINK News, saying, “We currently have officers responding to the scene along with multiple other agencies. We have limited details at this time, but we are working diligently to gather all the information.”

Several Lee County Sheriff’s Office marine units arrived at the dock to investigate.

A woman in scuba gear was seen on a boat, and about 30 minutes later, the units returned and used a sheet to cover the body.

The dock is now blocked off by tape, and the law enforcement presence has increased significantly.

A bystander described the scene before it became busy.

“A couple of police boats a sheriff’s boat here comes another one right now going back and forth,” said a bystander. “We’ve been here for about an hour or an hour and a half and we’ve definitely not seen a body.”

WINK News contacted LCSO regarding the investigation. Their public information officer confirmed the death investigation is in its initial stages.

For now, the sheriff’s office has not released further details about the death.
