Speed cameras in Cape Coral school zones go live to curb speeding

Published: Updated:

Drivers in Cape Coral should be extra cautious when navigating school zones.

New speed cameras have been activated to ensure safety, as school buses, children crossing, and drop-offs create a bustling environment.

Cape Coral police announced that these cameras went live on Saturday. They will be tested on Monday morning before school starts for the week.

One camera is specifically located near Cape Coral Christian School on Santa Barbara Boulevard near Nicholas Parkway.

For now, drivers caught speeding by these red speed cameras will receive only a warning. However, this will change by the end of the month.

Cape Coral police will issue warnings until March 30. Starting March 31, citations will be enforced, and speeders exceeding the limit by more than 10 miles per hour in a school zone will receive a $100 ticket by mail.

“At any given school, the minimum number of students in our schools is 1000. So, if you take a percentage of those who are walking or riding their bikes, that’s a lot of kids. And it just takes one,” said Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore.

The cameras will operate on school days, starting 30 minutes before school begins, throughout the school day, and 30 minutes after school ends. Because school hours vary, the specific times will be posted in each school zone.

With these new measures, Cape Coral aims to enhance safety in school zones and protect students.
