Florida troopers arrest street racing duo for going over 100 mph on SR-82

Two men were arrested after racing at speeds over 100 miles per hour on State Road 82, a road notorious for speeding incidents.

Rafael Antonio Jimenez and Gustave Louimat were arrested Thursday night after Florida Troopers clocked them at 100 miles per hour.

Residents familiar with the area were unsurprised by the arrests. Arnold Lopez, who lives in Lehigh Acres said, “Not one bit. They get pulled over all the time for speeding all the time on this road. So no shock there.”

Speeding is not uncommon on State Road 82. Last year in July, the Fort Myers Police Department caught another driver going 100 miles per hour. WINK News was able to ride along with local patrol cars to witness the speeding firsthand.

Back in July, Ryan Beiner of the Fort Myers Police Department Traffic Unit said, “There’s a lot of people out here that are speeding and aggressively driving and they are getting into crashes and killing people.”

Drivers expressed their concerns about the road. Lopez mentioned, “It’s busy and then dangerous, it gets real compact, and then that’s when also people like to cut people off, intertwine or try to get around people. And then that’s when things start to happen.”

Some drivers avoid State Road 82 altogether due to its reputation, with one woman saying she refuses to drive in Florida and lets her husband take the wheel.

Both men were charged with reckless driving and street racing but have since bonded out. Their vehicles, however, will remain impounded by Florida Highway Patrol for the next 30 business days.
