Canadian snowbirds visiting Florida will face new immigration requirements starting next month.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced the new rules, which will impact Canadians planning to stay in Florida for 30 days or more.

Beginning April 11, Canadian visitors will need to submit a background check, including fingerprints and biographic information such as name, gender and date of birth for those 14 years and older.

Each year, over 1 million Canadians travel to the United States seeking sunshine, with about 60,000 flocking to Florida, according to World Population Review. This influx boosts the local economy and brings in significant foot traffic.

Noncompliance with these regulations could lead to fines of up to $5,000, six months in jail or both.

Starting April 11, unregistered Canadian snowbirds will face stricter rules for extended stays in the United States.
