A structure fire broke out early this morning on Crescent Island, off St. James City, prompting a response from local fire departments.

The Lee County Marine Emergency Response Team (MERT) was activated due to the island’s remote location, accessible only by water.

The Matlacha Pine Island Fire Control District, Sanibel Fire Department and Cape Coral Fire Department deployed marine assets to tackle the blaze.

According to the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Control District, the Pine Island fire boat played a crucial role by supplying water for firefighting operations.

A 1,000-gallon propane tank vented during the incident, complicating efforts to extinguish the flames.

While the main house was spared, a utility building was completely destroyed.

The Lee County Strike Team of engines was initially dispatched for additional support but was later canceled as marine units successfully managed the fire.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
