FEMA is encouraging affected residents to register for assistance.

The Federal Emergency Government Agency (FEMA) administrative director held a news conference regarding an update on the response to Hurricane Milton in Punta Gorda.

The city said they have seen unprecedented storm surge from both hurricanes Helene and Milton, which have decimated the downtown area.

Almost all downtown businesses are currently closed and are in the process of recovery.

The city said they have a lot of cleanup to do.

“We have a very structured program when it’s the removal of the debris and getting it into the appropriate area, but we know that leading up to Milton, there was a lot of emergency movement of debris, and so we are going to be very flexible in how we are looking at the process that was taken to really protect the community as they were preparing for Milton,” said FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell.

They were just starting to clean up the debris from Helene when the storm hit, which is making businesses start all over.
