Lee County residents still dealing with damage from hurricanes

Hurricane recovery has been an ongoing project here in Southwest Florida since Hurricane Ian.

Now, following Hurricane Helene in late September and Hurricane Milton almost two weeks after, some of you will soon get a letter in your mailbox warning that your home is “substantially damaged,” meaning it needs to be restored or rebuilt with current flood regulations in mind.

Many people had just barely recovered from Ian. Then came Helene, followed by Milton. The signs that several hurricanes hit in SWFL are very visible.

Milton, the latest, hit nearly a month ago.

That FEMA 50% rule is concerning for people living in Matlacha.

This is a small, tight-knit community, a designated historic fishing village since 1990, but it is also resilient.
