Local soldier to receive Purple Heart

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.- WINK News is learning Private First Class Justin Johnson from Punta Gorda is expected to receive a Purple Heart for his bravery during the 2009 Fort Hood shooting.

President Obama is expected to sign legislation authorizing Purple Heart medals for acts of heroism during the shooting attack.

Monday, Governor Rick Scott honored Johnson saying he joins all Floridians in expressing sincere gratitude to the soldier and his family for his sacrifice.

Governor Scott also honored an Orange County staff sergeant who was hurt in the Fort Hood shooting.

13 people died during the attack and more than 30 were hurt.
