School poverty report shows many kids eligible for federally funded lunch

WASHINGTON- According to a research bulletin issued by the Southern Education Foundation this month, more than half of all school kids in the nation’s public schools were qualified as low income for 2013.

Subsequently, more than half of the school kids in the state of Florida were eligible for federally funded free lunches.

The Harry Chapin Food Bank, which WINK partners with every year to do a ‘Hunger Walk’ to raise money, helps feed many of those low income families.

CEO and president of the Harry Chapin Food Bank, Al Brislain, told WINK news this year’s event raised $315,000 to help keep the shelves at his food bank stocked.

“There’s so many of us that are one life event away from being in that position,” said Brislain.
