Deadline to register for Affordable Care Act approaching

Published: Updated:

FORT MYERS, Fla.- New numbers released Friday show more than 10 million people have already signed up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

Florida leads the country with more than a million signups.

This is the first year that people who don’t have insurance, will face penalties from the federal government.

Some people are saying they will pay the fine out of principle, because they disagree with the Affordable Care Act’s provision requiring everyone to carry health insurance.

WINK News spoke with White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest about the program’s critics.

“Here’s what I would say, just go online and check for yourself. Don’t let a politician tell you what’s best for your family. Go to healthcare.gov and see if there are good options for yourself to make sure you get covered and your family gets covered,” said Earnest.

Congress is trying to change or even repeal the Affordable Care act, but the White House says President Barack Obama will veto any changes.

The website to sign up is healthcare.gov. The deadline to sign up is Sunday, Feb. 15.
