ARCADIA, Fla.- Dozens of abused dogs are now in good hands.

DeSoto County deputies seized Great Danes and other breeds from a home along Southeast Jeans Road.

Now those dogs are being nursed back to good health at the DeSoto County Animal Shelter.

Some of the dogs are still recovering from eye infections and open sores but they are now bathed, tick free and most importantly, in a safe place.

Fifty-five dogs and 13 puppies are now recovering with the help of law enforcement.

Investigators say the dogs were malnourished, dehydrated, and covered in fleas, ticks and feces. Animal control pulled hundreds of ticks off the dogs and lathered them in tick preventative.

Two of the rescued Great Danes gave birth to 11 puppies just days ago. Animal control tells WINK News they aren’t doing so well.

Officials want to make sure all the dogs are healthy before they can be adopted. Until then, no one will be able to see the animals.
